Spirited gifts

We asked some top B.C. bartenders which bottle of local spirits they would put on their Christmas list

I’d pick Okanagan Spirits Laird of Fintry Single Malt Whisky. It is a Scotch-style single malt made with 100 per cent B.C. malted barley using French and American oak, and finished in Okanagan wine barrels. The nose is unbelievable with plum, vanilla, raisins, berries, poached pears, nuts, and classic oak characteristics that continue on the palate. It has a dry finish with a hint of sweet vanilla and baking spices. I would make a twist on a Rob Roy — a Rodney’s Roy — with 2 oz. Laird of Fintry,
0.3 oz. Noilly Prat Rouge,
0.3 oz. Noilly Prat Ambre and two dashes Bittered Sling Cascade Celery Bitters.

2016 Deighton Cup Cocktail Jockey Competition

Twelve of B.C.’s top bartenders took on the Deighton Cup Cocktail Jockey competition at Hastings Racecourse in July, using Bulleit Bourbon as the base for their race day creations

Jayce Kadyshuk won the Fastest Bartender award for Victoria’s Clive’s Classic Lounge.

L’Abbatoir’s Katie Ingram dressed the part and raced to an Honourable Mention with her Match Point.
Royal Dinette’s Kaitlyn Stewart took home the cup with her Bojack Horseman.

Justin Taylor (The Cascade Room) shook his Horse Play to the tune of the Lone Ranger to win an Honourable Mention.

The winning cocktail by Kaitlyn Stewart combined Bulleit Bourbon with a house-made Okanagan cherry shrub and Stewart’s own Milk Liqueur.
